Mental Health Awareness
By: Kim Dodge
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, shining a spotlight on the critical importance of mental well-being, particularly in industries like construction, where physical safety often takes precedence. However, mental health issues significantly impact construction workers, fueled by the high-pressure environment of tight deadlines, safety concerns, and strenuous labor. Alarmingly, construction ranks among the highest in suicide rates among U.S. industries, attributed to factors such as job insecurity, financial instability, and workplace culture.
Furthermore, substance abuse is prevalent among construction workers as they seek coping mechanisms for job stresses. This is compounded by the stigma surrounding mental health, which impedes workers from seeking help. Long hours and isolation exacerbate these challenges, fostering feelings of loneliness and affecting job performance and safety.
A notable obstacle is the lack of access to mental health resources, worsened by irregular work schedules and limited awareness. Despite these challenges, some companies are taking strides to prioritize mental health, offering programs like Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and mental health training. For example, Brin proudly provides TEAM Wellness at Work EAP resources to all employees. For details on this important benefit, please reach out to HR or visit their website www.startwithteam.com.
As we mark Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s proactively take the following steps:
- Educate ourselves on mental health conditions and treatments.
- Initiate open conversations about mental health.
- Prioritize self-care through exercise, meditation, and socializing.
- Seek support when needed without hesitation.
- Challenge mental health stigma and promote available resources.
- Practice gratitude and establish healthy boundaries.
- Stay connected and advocate for mental health policies.
- Cultivate mindfulness to reduce stress.
- Celebrate every milestone in our mental health journey.
Together, let’s prioritize mental well-being, fostering healthier environments for everyone, including those in construction, not only during Mental Health Awareness Month but also beyond.
